Prof. April Gu Receives NSF Award
CEE Professor April Gu received an NSF award to support her project entitled “RAPID Response: Assessment of Potential Ecological and Health Impact of Coal Ash Spill in Dan River North Carolina.” On February 2, 2014, the nation’s third largest coal ash spill occurred in Eden, North Carolina, where a drainage pipe under a 27 acre waste pond collapsed, spewing thousands of tons of coal ash and toxic sludge mixed with millions of gallons of contaminated water into the Dan River. In addition to recreational use, the Dan River also serves as the source of drinking water for the residents along the river. This urgent project, conducted within a short time span in response to this disaster, aims to provide a fast, initial assessment of the toxicity of the Dan River water and sediment with spatial and temporal resolutions at locations upper-, near-, and down-stream of the Duke Energy dump point.
