Northeastern Students Win 2019 Chi Epsilon Awards

Two Civil and Environmental Engineering students, Jeremy Norton, E'19, and Krissy Govertsen, PhD'23, are 2019 Chi Epsilon award recipients. Founded in 1922, Chi Epsilon is the national honor society for civil engineering, with 137 chapters across the US. These awards “honor engineering students who have exemplified the principles of ‘Scholarship, Character, Practicality, and Sociability’ in the civil engineering profession.”

Jeremy Norton is an undergraduate student from Chepachet, Rhode Island pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering. He won a Chi Epsilon National Scholarship awarded in honor of Charles G. Hyde. Jeremy majored in civil engineering because it blended his love of architecture with his passion for solving problems and discovering how things work. He is a member of Chi Epsilon’s Northeastern Chapter, a member and former officer of NUSACE, and a project manager for Concrete Canoe, a yearly contest where teams compete to design, build and pilot a boat made from concrete. In addition to his academic work, he has completed three co-ops, gaining real-word experience in the engineering department of DN Tanks, in a project management role for D.C. Beane Construction, and as a project engineer for Sea-Dar Construction. Upon graduation, Jeremy will continue on at Sea-Dar Construction, working in project management. In the future, he wants to work on the construction of large buildings.

Krissy Govertsen is a PhD student from Chatham, NY, pursuing a doctorate in Interdisciplinary Engineering with a focus on sustainable building systems. She is one of three winners of Chi Epsilon’s 2019 James and Sharon Weinel Fellowship. Working with her advisor, Assistant Professor Michael Kane, she studies smart sensor data to develop thermal models for buildings. “These models are then used to show projections of how that home will respond to extreme temperature related weather events,” said Krissy. She is a member of Chi Epsilon, Tau Beta Pi, and ASCE. After graduation, she wants to spend some time working in industry before launching her own company.
