Monitoring Aquatic Ecosystems

Civil and Environmental Engineering Associate Professor Ferdi Hellweger was awarded a $61K NSF grant to determine what environmental impacts affect the life cycle of phytoplankton.

Professor Hellweger is Acting Director of the Center for Urban Environmental Studies at Northeastern University. He teaches classes in the area of environmental engineering and hydrology. His research interests are in surface water quality, microbial ecology and systems bioecology (the combination of systems biology and systems ecology). Locally, he is especially interested in the Charles River and wants to contribute to making it swimmable again. His goal is to build a forecast system that can be used to predict when & where it is safe to swim.
