The PROTECT Center Receives Five Year $13.5 Million NIH Grant

Congratulations to Akram Alshawabkeh, the George A. Snell Professor of Engineering, and team of the Puerto Rico Testsite for Exploring Contamination Threats (PROTECT) Center, who received a five-year $13.5 million award to renew the center from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences within the National Institutes of Health. The center will continue studying exposure to and mitigation of environmental contamination that causes preterm births, with testbed activities in Puerto Rico. Congratulations to Nimet Yildirim, a Ph.D. student in the bioengineering program and in the CEE department, advised by CEE Prof. April Gu and MIE Prof. Ahmed Busnaina, along with the coauthors Jin Young Lee, Han Chul Cho and Sivasubramanian Somu, for winning the Young Researchers Forum Award from the 2014 IEEE Biosensors & Bioelectronics conference. Prof. Luca Caracoglia Receives NSF Award

CEE Associate Professor Luca Caracoglia was awarded an NSF award to support his research assessing dynamic response of tall buildings and wind-turbine towers to transient wind loads due to downburst windstorms, a meteorological phenomenon that induces an outburst of damaging wind loads near the ground.
