The PhD level program at Northeastern University is flexible and may be adapted to any subject area in civil and environmental engineering, including interdisciplinary options within the department or across departments or colleges.

As a graduate of the Ph.D. program in Civil Engineering at Northeastern University, you will be able to:

  • Use basic engineering concepts flexibly in a variety of contexts.
  • Formulate a research plan.
  • Communicate orally a research plan.
  • Conduct independent research.

The PhD program must be completed in accordance with the residency requirements for the degree. Both full-time and part-time students should meet with a faculty advisor at least once during each semester of study to arrange for an appropriate sequence of courses to satisfy all degree requirements.

Funding is available for graduate students focused on research in the form of graduate research assistantships, graduate teaching assistantships, and fellowships.

For more information on the Graduate Program please see the Graduate School of Engineering or contact the Director of Graduate Studies.

The PhD in Civil Engineering can be combined with a Gordon Engineering Leadership certificate. Learn more about the benefits of this unique program.
