About Us

Welcome to the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Northeastern University, located in the heart of Boston, Massachusetts.

We have over 100 years of history and tradition of preparing successful engineers who have made important contributions to the development of our civil infrastructure and the built environment, both nationally and internationally.

Our mission is to prepare undergraduate and graduate engineers to excel in their chosen careers, including civil engineering practice, research, teaching, and management; public sector infrastructure management, land use planning and development; and environmental remediation and restoration.

At the undergraduate level, our acclaimed cooperative education program lets students gain practical experience, and sample the challenges and rewards of the different civil engineering disciplines. Upon graduation, students typically have significant practical experience, a clear sense of career objectives, and excellent employment opportunities, very often from previous co-op employers.

Our strong graduate and research programs provide students with opportunities to advance the state-of-the-art in civil engineering, create new technologies, gain advanced knowledge of civil engineering practice, and to prepare for life-long learning.

We take pride in our student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (NUASCE). NUASCE has been recognized nine times as the most outstanding chapter in the country. Student activities include weekly seminars, field trips, Steel Bridge and Concrete Canoe competitions, and social events. But most importantly, through the chapter's community service projects, our students experience the satisfaction of serving people through Civil Engineering - the true mission of our profession.

We are excited about the future of our profession and the important role our department will continue to play in this rapidly advancing profession. I invite you to browse through our website and get a closer look at our programs, our faculty, and their research, the Student Chapter, and Northeastern University.
